How to Meditate
A lot of people ask me about learning how to meditate. When I first sought to develop a meditation practice I naturally read an array of books on the subject, perhaps too many. Truth is, after going to the downtown New York City Barnes and Nobles and feeling overwhelmed with all of the book choices... I decided to just start reading. Lucky you, though, because here is a list of my top 3 book recommendations for those getting started in the art of meditation. Please feel free to add to the discussion by sharing your experiences and recommendations as well. For those who are seeking a more advanced level of guidance, please contact me.
1. Ordinary Magic Edited by John Welwood - This is a wonderful journey around the world's use of meditation and mindfulness. It features 35 essays by spiritual teachers each sharing valuable insights and experiences. This one is not going to give you the "how to" but will give you plenty in the way of conceptualizing the practice of meditation.
2. The Art of Meditation by Joel Goldsmith - A great introduction to the meditative art that goes hand in hand with another book of his that I really love: Practicing the Presence. Goldsmith is awesome. All of his books are great! (And yes, I snuck in an extra book for ya.)
3. Meditation in the Silence by E.V. Ingraham - This is a Unity booklet that serves as a wonderful introduction to the principles and practices of "the silence."
This is just a starter list. There are many great books to support and develop your practice. Enjoy the journey!
Lovingly,
Shawna Marie
